Each year, more than $2 million dollars in university graduate fellowships are offered to full-time master’s and PhD students to recognize and support academic excellence. The fellowships are offered to students who have demonstrated superior intellectual ability and academic accomplishment.

Students must be recommended by their department or unit to the Faculty of Graduate Studies for a UMGF.

Value UMGF master’s: $14,000 per year
UMGF doctoral: $18,000 per year

Value and duration

The maximum value of the UMGF master’s prizes is $28,000, or $14,000 per year for 12 or 24 months.

The maximum amount for UMGF doctorate grants is $72,000, or $18,000 per year for 12, 24, 36, or 48 months.

The value and duration of an award are decided by the departments/units, who must also satisfy the requirements listed in the eligibility table.

A graduate student may receive UMGF funding for a total of five years (60 months). As a result, a student who was awarded a UMGF for two years during their master’s program will only be qualified for three years of financing under the same program during their PhD studies.

The current competition’s winning applicants must accept their awards in May 2022, September 2022, or January 2023. The prize must be declined by students who are unable to take it during this academic year.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this prize, students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 at the time of application. If your department has a higher GPA requirement, please get in touch with them.

To hold an award:

Students must have cleared provisional admission as a master’s or PhD student in a graduate program at the University of Manitoba or have been admitted as a full-time student without provision.

The University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship is still valid in the division or unit where it was first offered.

Application and process

For information on the UMGF application procedure and deadline, please contact your department or unit. The Faculty of Graduate Studies receives recommendations for students after the department or unit makes its choice. FGS will send an official letter informing the award winners via email.
